First off, THE ABDOMINAL MUSCLES DON'T WORK LIKE THAT! Why do people not seem to grasp the simple concept that fat is on TOP of the muscle, not underneath!? The only way this figure would be even remotely possible is if he was super roided up, with not a trace of fat on his body, since steroids make the intestines grow and push the abdominal muscles outwards, due to the intestines being muscles too.
And no, I don't care that I'm bringing logic into fantasy, because you know what, fantasy is a reflection of real life. This is why Liefeld was so hated. No understanding of how the human body works. This ogre has a human musculature, which is why IT NEEDS TO FOLLOW THE RULES OUR ANATOMY DOES. No amount of pretty shading and lighting effects can fix a broken base.
Also the leg muscles are off. The bone is seriously like, wrapping around the hip or something, there's no stylistic answer to that, it's just plain wrong. Not to mention the perspective is off for the entire piece as well. Instead of being dynamic and cool, it just looks like the ogre is falling backwards, on a misshapen pedestal.
As stated previously, Tony, your rendering here is great. Now, to Mike, you should REALLY try to compliment your colorists' work with you know, this basic knowledge of anatomy I'm speaking of, and how 3 point perspective works, to create a coherent and cohesive base for your colorist to work off of! (I'm choosing to ignore the serratus area, which includes about 40 made up muscles; due to the fact that these tumors on character's sides are a common and recurring problem in comic book artwork, I'd just be yelling at people for that nonstop if I started) There should be a higher standard than this for people who are making fat wads of cash off of art!
Ok, I'm done. This is not nearly as bad as most of what Image Comics produced, and many other Liefeld-inspired, infinite pouch-sporting, leg-four-times-the-width-of-the-head creations, but today, here and now, is a new age in comic book art, and everything that is making someone money deserves to undergo a full range of scrutinies. I wouldn't want to live in a world where we blindly accept everything put before us as being right, or good.
professional critiques we've gotten.
Oh and it's also nice to not see the fans (yet) attacking the one giving the critique, armed with the idiotic sentence "Oh yeah, let's see you do better" I dunno, it's just immature to me, and pisses me off. It's worse when the artist does it him/herself. I could write a 600 page dissertation about why that statement is idiotic, pointless and insulting, but this isn't the time or place.
That does introduce one other thing...as is the case on CA, people don't indulge in complimenting the negative points with positive. There's no need for it when you're LOOKING for C&C, which kind of rubbed off on me after a while. This can...make me seem very negative and hateful... >__>
Also, Cho'Gall looks impressive. After reading issue 19, I wonder if that's a glove or just... another thing
